To See or Not to See
We all know that declining vision is a sign of aging; I used to joke that around the age of 40 your arms just seem to get too short for your book and it is time to find a decent pair of reading glasses. Now I do not joke so much as spend way too much time hunting for my spectacles which I seem to lose regularly. (They are often on top of my head.) But when is a loss of vision abnormal and what are the signs that you need to take a trip in to see the optometrist?
An article posted to Medline Plus on August 16, 2011 written by Diana Kohne answers the question of when it is time to see the eye doctor.
According to the National Eye Institute some vision loss as we get older is normal but if you have trouble completing everyday tasks even while wearing prescription eye glasses then you may have what is called low vision and need to go back to the eye doctor because low vision is not normal and could be a sign of another much more serious problem.
Ask yourself the questions below to see if you are having more trouble seeing then is normal.
Do you have trouble recognizing the faces of friends or family? If Uncle Bernie says woof when you greet him you could have a problem.
Can you perform tasks such as reading, sewing or cooking, even while wearing prescription glasses? Or can you perform them as well as you once did?
Is it becoming more difficult to match clothing colors? While there is nothing wrong with looking like “Rainbow Bright” it is not normal if you do it on accident.
Do the lights around seem dimmer then they once did? Are you sure you are using the same watt bulb?
Can you read road signs and store front signs?
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms have someone drive you over to the eye doctor for an exam. Do not drive yourself. You could end up in another state.
