Red Meat Increases Diabetes Risk
Nothing is as all American as enjoying a good old hot dog on a Sunday afternoon while enjoying the game but can hot dogs actually increase your risk of developing diabetes? According to a study done by Harvard researchers they can.
A story posted in Medical News Today written on August 16,2011a new study done by those researchers at Harvard found that processed red meats such as hot dogs, bacon, sausages and bologna can indeed increase your risk of type 2 diabetes by about half.
A daily serving of processed meats equivalent to 1 hot dog or 2 slices of bacon increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 51%!
The researchers looked at 20 years worth of data from men who were involved in the Health Professionals Follow Up Study, 28 years worth of data from women in the Nurses Health Study I as well as another 14 years worth of data from the Nurses Health Study II, a total of 442,101 folks, 28,228 of which developed type 2 diabetes during the study.
"Clearly, the results from this study have huge public health implications given the rising type 2 diabetes epidemics and increasing consumption of red meats worldwide. The good news is that such troubling risk factors can be offset by swapping red meat for a healthier protein," Said Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard.
The good news here that the professor was talking about is that you can reverse your risk by swapping out the hot dogs and other red meats for nuts, whole grains and low fat dairy products.
In other words while it is a good idea to totally give up that bacon sandwich or those pregame hot dogs they will not hurt you as bad if you follow them by a few days of getting your protein in a more wholesome way by eating whole grains and nuts.
